Yes!! I was pretty shocked by that when I saw the movie. There were parts of the movie that I loved, but between the sexist Who family and the awful dentist scene, I kind of wished I hadn't taken my kids to see it.

...though after we saw it, I *did* use the movie as a point of discussion with them about sexism in the media. I think my nine-year-old son got it; I am not so sure that my six-year-old daughter did, and I'm worried that she may well have tried to internalize the sexist message, because she does things like that. Sigh....

This is why I sometimes wish I'd had my daughter first. People give all sorts of priority to my son over my daughter, and it feels unwarranted to me, as if they are prefering him because he is male, but we figure that maybe it's because he was born first and he is older. If I'd had my daughter first, then it would be much clearer whether people were showering attention on the firstborn child or the male child. Also, I think that then the balance of power in the family would be more equal -- the female would have the advantage of firstbornness, and the male would have the advantage of maleness. But, as it worked out, my first child has both of those advantages and my second child has neither.

Though, on the other hand, because on average females mature faster than males, having a boy first and a girl second means that they do a great job of gravitating toward each other's level and playing on an equal footing. *That* is something I never thought about before I had kids, and it has turned out to be very neat indeed.

Actually, yes, yes I did. :)

My kids are too far apart to be anything but divergent in the developmental sense (5 and 9), but at least they like the same sorts of things.
