I agree about how it can be hard to find a community of interest in the face-to-face space. It depends on your particular community, though, and how willing you are to get out and find people you have things in common with. Sometimes the online space becomes a way to avoid trying to find face-to-face friends; that's the trend I worry about.
Don't get me wrong, I think that the online community I get from livejournal has been very good for me, and has enabled me to go more confidently into the "real" world and find friends. I just can see the traps too.
