Origins Report
Jul. 3rd, 2006 10:44 amOrigins has been a blast. I still need five or six of me to do everything I would like to do, but this year I relaxed and let it go. It has made all the difference.
We still only played train games for paid events. Buying the Puffing Billy ribbon for $18 and playing that all weekend is not as satisfying as full variety would be, but satisfying enough and cheaper and easier than trying to puzzle through everything available and schedule it all. PB has enough variety to do it for me, and the people are largely fabulous and funny. Like craving Fillet Mignon with a sour cream, chive, cheese and bacon-covered baked potato and getting a reasonably good steak with steamed veggies instead. Probably better for me, and not quite as expensive.
I continue to show that even when I am not trying, I am reasonably competitive.
illyaa and I still trade off kid duty (though thanks to
sorcycat, we did get to both play Silverton Friday night), so I only get to play about half the slots. Even with an abysmal start (by Friday night I had one 2nd and a bunch of last places), I made it onto the top half of the first page of PB tourney standings (~15th place) after three quick wins and a blindingly close Union Pacific game (final scores: 115-113(me)-113-112) on Saturday. I regret that last one a little due to giving Dave L. lots of bonus points for the close game.
illyaa and I both made it to the Semis of the Ticket to Ride tourney, and then into the finals. We placed 1st (my dear husband) and tied for 2nd (me). Not bad. He now has a lovely plaque. ;-) We both have automatic semi-final berths in the "National Championship" for Ticket at Gen Con. Would you believe we are actually contemplating going for just that, one night only?
We both managed to collect all the Catan-themed ribbons (Ore, Grain, Clay, Sheep, and Wood) and become Knights of Catan. We didn't win anything in the big drawing, but we each used our half-off coupons. We completed quests in the dealer hall for another drawing (J and S finished, but I only finished 2 out of 3), but didn't win anything from that either. Or in the Fun Again drawing. I don't really care about not getting big prizes though. Collecting ribbons was awesome. I had a blast wheedling punches for the quests by putting a poster for a company in the bathroom, handing out mints and flyers, discussing movies or other silly stuff, and playing demos.
I bought us a travel-edition Catan (so we could teach S to play) with my handy dandy Mayfair coupon. I would not have paid full price for it, but at half-off, it was worth it to me.
illyaa bought Mesopotamia with his. We also snagged a demo copy of Hey, That's My Fish; Family Fluxx; Are you a Werewolf?; new Power Grid boards; NanoFictionary; Xactica; the all-important Ticket to Ride Marklin; and some zippered metal cases intended for dice. I plan to try them out for organizing our crayon-style train games components.
We are still in Columbus and plan to check out the Independence Day festivities. The fireworks here (aka Red, White, and Boom) are pretty awesome, then back home tomorrow.
Happy 4th to y'all.
