Warning: there is some non-work-safe language.

I had been thinking about buying a permanent account when the sale was first promoted some weeks ago.

But after thinking about it some more, I decided not to. It would take more than seven years for me to reap a financial benefit for paying up front. In net terms, that is an eon.

I'm sure I would use all the extra icons, since I have many yanked icons. They are just waiting for me to have space to use them. But I'm not going to pay for extra icons.

I'm happy to support LJ with my paid account. It's a service I use and love. I don't assume that the service will be around for eight years, that it will be in the same form in eight years, or that I will still be using it in eight years. I probably will, but things do change. Too much is uncertain about what exactly I get for my $150 in the future.

LJ/Six Apart is a private company. They can do whatever they darn well please under their TOS, because, like many such documents, it's subject to change. It currently has language saying they will host your journal until such time as they are "unwilling" to do so. Big honking loopholes for a dump and run, if so desired. Not that I think they will, but they could.

I've seen responses from several permanent account holders to the effect that as soon as LJ has your perm account $, it has little incentive to listen to you any more. It already has everything it's going to get from you.

Also, I just re-upped my paid account two months ago. The only credit is the ability to transfer my paid account to another lj. No thanks.
