The really funny thing is that I once knew a video game programmer who despritely wanted to develop a game that embraced Buddhism. Some of the ideas he had were great, but some were similar to the above and just made us laugh. Sadly, he had to admit that such a thing just wouldn't sell, but he said that he would always keep his ideas on hand...for when things changed.
Maybe if the character gained powers as it lost stuff like D&D monks? But again, Buddhism's true rewards are internal, so having outward rewards even in the form of powers, doesn't make lots of sense.
Maybe if you lose experience if you use your powers poorly? And get downgraded again?
The best part of course is that in the end you achieve your final reward because you are no longer able to respawn in the game. I can just see this black screen that comes up with the words "You have completed your quest, congratulations."
Of course if it is proper Buddhist game you don't get to play again. :-)
